Mission

Ecotrust's mission is to inspire fresh thinking that creates economic opportunity, social equity, and environmental well-being. Our primary aim is to create and demonstrate new ways of doing business that are both profitable and good for communities and the environment - to establish tangible examples of success and share them with the world.

Details

Ecotrust's initiatives produce environmental, economic and social returns - what we call the triple bottom line. We bring locally grown food into schools to promote children's health and a thriving regional food economy. We seek to protect and restore lands, rivers and oceans while delivering financial benefit to landowners and communities. We develop award-winning software that improves land, ocean and community planning the world over. Ecotrust works locally in ways that promise hope abroad, and we take inspiration from the wisdom of Native people and First Nations.

The economic crisis and growing concern about the profound effects of climate change, are all pointing to ideas Ecotrust has been helping to pioneer for almost twenty years: social investing, slow food, green building, forest carbon sequestration, sustainable fisheries, a return to local and regional economies, and increasing recognition of the rights and ideas of aboriginal people. Throughout our history, we have converted every $10 donated into $50 of working capital for Northwest communities, economies and nature. Ecotrust's accomplishments include:

  • Working with the Haisla First Nation to protect the 800,000-acre Kitlope River rain forests watershed in British Columbia, perhaps the largest watershed of its type remaining in the world.
  • Mapping the coastal temperate rainforest of North America spanning mid-Alaska to northern California, leading to its recognition as the largest forest of its type in the world.
  • Launching Ecotrust Forests LLC, the world's first forest ecosystem investment fund, now with thousands of acres under management on the West Coast.
  • Co-founding the world's first environmental bank ShoreBank Pacific and ShoreBank Enterprise Cascadia now with $300 million in assets.
  • Creating the North Pacific Fisheries Trust, a $6 million fund supporting local fishermen and coastal communities' access to Oregon, Washington and Alaska fisheries.
  • Leading the collaborative Whole Watershed Restoration Initiative, which since 2007, has supported the community-based restoration of 3,450 acres and 120 stream miles of Pacific salmon and steelhead habitat in high priority basins throughout Oregon and Washington.
  • Completing America's first LEED-certified-gold historic building renovation, the Jean Vollum Natural Capital Center in Portland, Oregon.
  • Building a network of America's most important indigenous leaders, and recognizing them each year with awards and financial support.
  • Serving as a lynchpin in a $20 million local food network.
  • Creating The New Mainstream, a Vivid Picture of Sustainable Agriculture in California, the first statewide, holistic assessment of agriculture in the world based on social, economic and environmental principles.
