The Forest Park Conservancy's (FPC) top priority is the health and well-being of Forest Park through stewardship of this irreplaceable resource. FPC and our volunteers serve a vital role in helping care for Forest Park - we improve and maintain trails, as well as protect and enhance Forest Park through extensive volunteer stewardship and restoration. We are committed to making sure all recreational activities are in balance with good environmental and wildlife stewardship.
The goals of The Forest Park Conservancy are:
- Preserve, protect and restore Forest Park through best management practices and advocacy.
- Establish the Conservancy as an effective organization.
- Increase the public awareness, appreciation and enduring stewardship for Forest Park.
- Improve the visitor's experience of Forest Park.
Just over 60 years ago, Portland's City Council, urged on by civic leaders, established Forest Park. The aspirations for Forest Park set forth then are arguably as cogent today as then:
- To encourage active living through outdoor recreation.
- Beautify our city and encourage wise land use and settlement patterns.
- To provide sanctuary for wildlife and a place for youth to learn and thrive.
- To encourage healthy forest management practices, reduce fire risk and erosion.
- Provide productive work.
- Acknowledge the extensive benefits of well stewarded public lands.
These same aspirations are at the heart of the Conservancy's and Portland Park's stewardship of this iconic reminder of our deep connection to nature and all things wild. In practice:
- The Forest Park Conservancy works collaboratively with Portland Park's & Recreation, Forest Park's owner and land manager, and a wide range of stakeholders on sustainable management plans and actions that protect Forest Park's habitat, its ecological, scenic and recreational values
- The Forest Park Conservancy generates the financial resources and organizational discipline to take on the awesome responsibility and honor of protecting, preserving and restoring Forest Park. The Conservancy has created a board and staff with experience, passion and integrity.
- Public support is the life-blood of long-term protection and enhancement of Forest Park. The Conservancy is actively building its member base in the greater-Portland metropolitan area to create the next generation of stewards and advocates for Forest Park.
- The Forest Park Conservancy works to improve the visitors' experience of Forest Park and support activities that offer everyone more opportunities to enjoy and learn from Forest Park while encouraging respect and stewardship for the park.
