Hells Canyon Preservation Council (HCPC) is a small, rural-based organization, headquartered in La Grande, Oregon, in the northeast corner of the state. All told, we monitor roughly 6 million acres of federal public land in Oregon, Idaho and Washington, and we do so with a small dedicated staff of just 6 people (4 FTE).
The Hells Canyon-Wallowa and Blue Mountain ecosystems are the linchpin ecosystem in the Northwest, connecting the Rockies with the Cascades and Coast Range. This area harbors the largest tracts of unroaded wildlands in Oregon, and represents natural areas that retain some of the region's most intact ancient and native grasslands and forests. HCPC was founded in 1965 to prevent damming of the deepest canyon in North America and to protect the surrounding wildlands and ecosystems. Today, HCPC still epitomizes unique, locally-based grassroots activism and a record of winning conservation victories against the odds.
HCPC's primary focus is the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area, along with the greater Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. We also monitor projects in the Umatilla, Malheur, Payette and Nez Perce National Forests, and the Baker and Cottonwood BLM Resource Areas. Our current programs include:
